Facts about the Vessel
"Biskop Hvoslef" is a restored rescue craft that are based in Tromsø, and are owned by "Stiftelsen R/S 38 Biskop Hvoslef" at Nordbynes in Balsfjord, Troms. The craft is declared to be preserved by the Norwegian goverment office "Riksantikvaren".
The vessel is
certified for 23 passengers and has 10 beds for sleepovers. It is well
equipped, and has 2 toilettes, 1 with a shower.
The vessel has a license for sailing with passengers, stated by the Norwegian Maritime Directorate.
To achive the license the ship and its crew has to go throug yearly
testing and also it has to fullfill surten safety issues. Bare in mind
that norwegian laws gives you the best security you can get on a ship,
in form of being one of the worlds best and strictest!!
The vessel "Biskop Hvoslef" where build in 1933 for the Norwegian rescue company "Redningsselskapet"
at the shipbuilders "Brødrene Løvfald" in Hardanger,
West-Norway. Its building costs where at that time NOK49.448 and was
given by captain Hvoslef and his wife, they wanted that the ship where
to be named after his father -who where a Bishop. The english name on
the ship are "Bishop Hvoslef". R/S stands for Redningsskøye =
Rescue Craft, and 38 is the number it had in the Norwegian rescue fleet.
The
vessel where in duty until 1965 and mainly it where securing the coast
of northern norway. It has rescued 9 ships from total damage, 49 humans
from the death, and assisted 2028 ships, and it also has worked as an
ambulance for the people of norways coast. It also participated in the
evacuation of Finnmark (northern-norway) under the war in 1944.
